The Migrant Women Association Malta (MWAM) had a valuable opportunity to partner with the Women Rights Foundation to raise awareness about legal rights and prevent gender-based violence (GBV) against migrant women and girls during the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
On 7 Dec 2024, MWAM hosted a session on the legal rights of GBV victims led by Dr. Lara Dimitrijevic.MWAM beneficiaries from various backgrounds, including India, Pakistan, Libya, Nepal, and Nigeria attended this session.
Dr. Dimitrijevic focused on the legal implications of domestic violence, emphasizing that it is a crime that can be reported, potentially leading to serious consequences for perpetrators. She clarified the difference between conflict and domestic violence, highlighting the power imbalances involved.Additionally, she pointed out that children can also be victims when they witness domestic violence. The participants’ comments and questions were varied, demonstrating a range of perspectives.
Both organizations plan to continue collaborating as this effort aligns with our shared objective to protect and prevent GBV among migrant women.
The WAVE microgrant funded the activity.
