SAĦĦA Community Kitchen Project

MWAM’s Community Kitchen project ‘SAĦĦA’ is a project that was born with the idea to promote integration and empowerment through employment and a shared love of cooking, in a safe space that understands cultural differences and embraces diversity. The project was established to find solutions and create opportunities for female asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants seeking employment.

The SAĦĦA Community Kitchen won the Malta Social Impact Award for Audience Participation award in 2017. This award allowed us to sustain cooking and catering activities from the beginning of 2018 till March 2020 when the organization was forced to pause temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SAĦĦA project’s main goals and objectives:

  • To promote integration and empowerment through employment
  • To share the love of cooking in a space understanding cultural differences and embracing diversity
  • To provide healthy, international dishes reflecting the different nationalities of the migrant women in Malta
  • To provide a safe space for asylum seekers, refugees, and migrant women to meet regularly, plan, prepare home-cooked, healthy and affordable meals
  • To promote and improve the cooking skills of migrant women to enable them to access the food industry
  • To generate income to maintain services provided by SAHHA to migrant women and their children affected by various issues and get more women involved
  • To further advocate for the empowerment and integration of migrant women

MWAM has recently been in contact with more than 200 women, 70% of whom want to work to support their families and  30% of whom are interested in starting cooking businesses.

The majority of migrant women already possess cooking skills but many have struggled to break into the job market in Malta. MWAM decided to invest in these cooking skills by improving migrant women’s knowledge and awareness of hygiene and generating income by offering cooking and catering services to the public.
