COVID-19 was a very unexpected event that struck the globe. Health is not only at stake; it is also the economic and psychological crisis that contributes to an increased risk of experiencing sexual and gender-based violence for refugees, asylum seekers, and migrant women living in Malta.
MWAM started the COVID emergency response support project in March of 2020 to support the immediate needs of women most impacted by the pandemic. The effects of this pandemic on women and their families are still being felt today. Covid has created many physical, mental, and economic stresses for our clients.
In this difficult situation, MWAM has been able support more than 350 women, 80 of which experienced SGBV.
Who do we focus on?
The demographic of the target group are varied, many of them come from Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America besides other nationalities. On average, the clients were in their thirties and the majority of them have children.
MAWM’s emergency response team manages and directs the project resources to help our clients, using a case-based approach and seeking constant communication and monitoring of the individual case to support it according to their priorities.
