Emergency Response Project Breakthroughs(continued)

We are very pleased to share that after a great success, the Emergency Response Support Project is still ongoing!

Thanks to your persistent support, MWAM was able to collect enough resources to assist over 200 women and families in the past 2 years!

During this period, we have opened our doors so that refugee, asylum seekers, and migrant women and their families could have access to your most valuable donations, from baby diapers to cleaning products, non-perishable foods, and clothes, and other immediate basic needs!

This does not mean that our job is done!

Times are still demanding for the women and families we help. Baby necessities are still needed. Likewise, monetary donations are valuable because with them we are able to sustain our support services.

Emergency Response Project Breakthroughs

From the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis to this date, Migrant Women Association Malta has been working closely with over 200 asylum seekers, refugees, and migrant women living in Malta.

Of these 200 women :

  • 135 Individuals receive support from our Emergency Response Project,
  • 65 are survivors or at risk of sexual and gender-based violence,
  • 57 are unemployed,
  • 10 are urgently seeking employment.
  • 63 of which are mothers,
  • Their ages range from 18-50.

Barriers

The main barriers faced by the 57 unemployed women to get legal jobs in Malta

  • Trouble adapting to Malta’s employment system and it’s legal benefits
  • Limited digital literacy
  • Language barriers
  • Cultural and Gendered based stereotypes against (migrant) women
  • Family and/or motherhood commitment

The Current Plan

Thanks to the Melita Foundation, the trainers’ cost will be covered, this enables MWAM to host the Getting Online Project where digital literacy and the participants’ knowledge of Malta’s employment will be improved. This will allow women to work legally and contribute to Malta’s economy.

How you can help

MWAM is currently raising money to fund the rest of the Getting Online Project.

Refugee day 2021

MWAM would like to take this opportunity to celebrate World refugee day 2021 introduce “Getting online”, a Project funded by the Melita Foundation.
Getting Online will provide female asylum seekers and refugees training in digital literacy and how to navigate in the job market.

MWAM chose this day as it is a reminder of the importance of raising awareness of human rights that many of us take for granted. This is especially common when a vast majority of impoverished communities seek to live filled with health, inclusion and empowerment.

Sadly many of the female asylum seekers and refugees have been greatly impacted by COVID-19 leading them to be left out due to the many technological advances they cannot keep up with.
We are looking forward for the major step that Getting Online will achieve toward empowering the participants.
